Wash and Go
This pandemic crisis has instilled a deeper understanding of human vulnerability and provided an opportunity to create new rituals for self-care and conscientious social interactions.
Permanent and accessible, the Wash and Go stations will be an elegant, sculptural, and modifiable fixture, promoting health and pleasure within our urban built environment. Installed throughout the city as engaging and interactive works of art, our proposed self-care stations will ritualize hygiene and hand washing within our everyday activities.
We have designed two models: One echoes classic industrial piping and affixes flush to exterior building walls. The other is a free-standing sculptural element suitable for pedestrian zones, parks, and plazas.
These durable fixtures are comprised of wash basins and multi-level spigots which can produce a cleansing mist or simply a cooling spray for summer recreation. They will be operated by sensors or foot pedals and fabricated with copper to enhance hygienic properties. While visually reminiscent of historic architectural elements, copper’s atomic makeup unleashes free radicals which trap and destroy germs on its surface within hours.
During this Coronavirus pandemic, we began to move through our days with a greater awareness of how many surfaces we touch, how often we touch our faces, and touch one another. Each touch becomes a meditation on the tenuous fabric of our social networks. We will adapt to regular ritual hand washing as a natural and repeating part of our everyday routines. Employing these hygiene stations will also reduce the volume of disposable sanitary items each of us carry and discard during a pandemic crisis.
We can cleanse in the intervals between our subway or cab ride to our destination, as well as before entering and exiting public sites and workspaces. We can cleanse to prepare mentally and physically for each stop on the day’s venture or wash off the debris, the germs, and the cares of the day before we return to our homes or sheltering spots.
