"Kékéré''

Kékéré is a small house built on the water in the lake area of Makoko in Lagos (Nigeria). Its particular shape reminds us of the fishing canoes that constitute the main economic activity of the inhabitants of this region. Kékéré is an ecological construction with a minimal impact on the environment and without electrical installation for a perfect communion with nature. In order to integrate our project into the environment, we have adopted the same construction process as that of the local population, notably by using local materials typical of the area's habitats, but also by a foundation on stilts. Indeed, the house rests on a reinforced concrete platform with a wooden layer on the floor supported by posts embedded in the depths of the river. The walls are made of wood, which is a local, economical and ecological material offering lightness, ease and speed of assembly but also a good thermal insulation for a comfortable feeling.

The roofing is made of bamboo stalks divided in two and stored one on top of the other playing the role of roofing but also of gutter. Moreover, bamboo is also an ecological material with an attractive price giving a beautiful aspect to the house but also a good thermal comfort and above all it is extremely solid, resistant and light so perfect for our construction. Kékéré benefits from a terrace open to the river with access by a ladder using a dugout canoe. We opted for a minimalist layout inside to optimize circulation. The free plan on a wooden floor gives rooms open on a large bay window offering a panoramic view on the river, bringing freedom of mind and serenity to the occupants. Kékéré is a dwelling designed for the frequent problem of indecent housing in the lake area of Makoko and appears as a solution to the rehabilitation of this area.
