SMART STATION The gas station typology is already in decline. In 2016, there were an estimated 116,000 gas stations in operation across Europe. By the end of 2017, this had fallen to 77,000. In the UK alone, the number of petrol stations has fallen by 80% since 1970. The need for a sustainable and innovative refuelling network is becoming vital as the market shifts toward alternative sources such as electric power, hydrogen and biofuel. Seamlessly integrating emerging clean technologies into the built environment is vital in creating SMARTER, more SUSTAINABLE CITIES.
With sustainable vehicles becoming more and more popular an opportunity arises due to the prolonged dwell time needed for battery recharging. So how do service stations evolve and accommodate for the new ‘lifestyle pause’ when recharging vehicles?
The SMART STATION re-energises the former gas station through creating a green place for the community. A site once surrounded with carbon emission is now a sustainable space, boasting a diverse URBAN ECOSYSTEM with a ZERO-CARBON footprint. The smart station uses an underground automated parking system which alerts users through their phone when their car is fully charged, reducing overcrowding of charging vehicles and providing an opportunity for urban agriculture above ground. Green spaces within cities create clean air, lower stress, boost happiness and reduce flood risks. Smart stations also embrace COMMERCE and the user experience in a digital age by providing opportunities such as drone delivery ports, sleeping pods, VR stations and flexible workspaces. The Smart Station is a sustainable iconic building within the city, with GREEN PLACEMAKING at the heart of its design.
