As cities expand, some factories that once located outside the city, come inside and take sizeable expanses in the heart of urban fabrics. These abandoned fields in the city provide insecure spaces for citizens and cause a decline in social, economic and physical statuses in urban districts. One practical strategy to protect these buildings is to endow them with an adaptive reuse.
Risbaf factory with an area of 69000 square meters was built in 1932 and after years it was abandoned. It is important to consider the specific situation of the factory at the intersection of the natural-historical axis of Isfahan, to improve the quality of the urban life. Therefore, effort to identify, revive and preserve the factory is really important. It creates a strong and effective connection between past values and contemporary world.
To design this collection, we sought to create a social space within the city. Where different activities for different tastes are easily possible in an urban context. Considering a multi-function complex was a good option. To begin changing the structure, in the first step for increasing the citizens' interaction with the complex, walls facing the main street, were removed, to welcome everyone. In the next step to solve the problem of elongation of the buildings along the length and taking into account the archetype of Chaharbagh, we connected the main workshops to each other with a stream, which created new entrances to each section of the workshops. By semi-transparent roof in these sections, we tried to create a memorable atmosphere that is reminiscent of the archetype of the vestibule in the Iranian architecture. The design on the roof is taken from the existing motifs of the factory and modern technology has been used in it.
By adding streams in perpendicular direction to the previous stream, we tried to create a beautiful axis of movement in the landscape and increase the pedestrian flow from the main street into the complex. After the structural reforms, we had to give new functions to different parts of the structure to increase urban life in the region and citizen interaction. For this, considering the historical site of the complex, it seemed appropriate to consider cultural uses. From this we came to the museum and gallery. After that, considering the creation of a collective entertainment space, we add amphitheater, cinema, children's playground, restaurant, and coffee shop. We have created an outdoor city balcony for cinema, where people can easily walk, relax and see the whole factory from above. Considering that the project site is also a tourist site, we build a new building near to the old stockroom to be a hotel, which is located near the museum. Finally, for the economic discussion, we consider a market around the structure. Stores sell goods related to that sector, for example, shops near the hotel sell handicrafts and near the playground, toys. In some sections, flexible spaces were created to meet the potential needs of the collection for different future uses.
