In 1840 a mansion was built for a Chepkin merchant family, which eventually turned into ruins nowadays. This place is an empty spot in a dense urban structure, which located on a busy pedestrian street in the center of the city. And adjacent with significant urban objects (St. Nicholas Cathedral, the Kazan Kremlin).
We appreciate our culture and what happened with the building. This feeling gives us an opportunity to keep the remains of the mansion and to give a new function to popular in our city place. And our proposal is reimagining an existing and underutilized building into an attractive and memorable piece of architecture that will combine a cultural characteristic of this place.
This is the implantation of a provocation object into a long-forgotten historical monument where only a wall left. The project proposed to give a new breath to this destroyed house — the creation of public space for citizens and tourists, and a viewing platform from the windows, which can activate the life of this place. It is a beautiful way to show people a new perspective to great points of Kazan.
The functional preservation of the remains of this monument and the introduction of a bright and contrasting design are provocation and an accent of this place.
Bright and bold design is an accent in dense buildings while emphasizing the historical value of the old facade, it provokes people to investigate explore to unite.
The idea of shape of the building was based on a legend about winged snake Zilant. "Since 1730, it has been the official symbol of Kazan. A Zilant is a legendary creature with the head of a dragon, the body of a bird, the legs of a chicken, the tail of a snake, the ears of a canine, red wings, sharp teeth, bright-yellow feathers and scaly dark-gray skin". The description of extraordinary character of the legend was reflected in our design and helped us to create an unexpected and bright point of attraction for citizens.
